Problem
In Germany, increasing numbers of young voters are turning toward far right parties, while discriminatory positions are becoming more acceptable in everyday conversations and attitudes. Often, these views are adopted without fully recognizing their depth or real world consequences. At the same time, woke, originally rooted in anti racism movements and referring to a critical awareness of systemic discrimination, is frequently used by opponents as a blanket, external label for progressive thinking and has been reappropriated as a tool of defamation. This shifts the debate away from content and toward stigma, making exclusionary thinking easier to normalize.
Approach
Wokeness is not a Weakness was developed as an awareness campaign that meets the target group within their own media ecosystem, especially on social media and in public space. To gain attention and create interruption, the visual language and tone deliberately reference the aesthetics of propaganda and right wing populist communication, while avoiding a moralizing or instructive stance. The entry claim Wake up functions as a first contact trigger via posters and TikTok, directing users toward further information and an interactive quiz that builds understanding of what is discriminatory and why. Participation is linked to ticket access, either through winning or purchasing, leading into a low threshold summer event designed to encourage exchange, strengthen belonging, and reopen community based connections where shared goals can be discussed without devaluing others.
Outcome
The project results in an integrated campaign ecosystem that is designed for long term impact rather than a single communication moment. It connects posters, TikTok content, an interactive quiz, and an event based format into a structured journey from attention to reflection to participation. Merchandise carrying the claim Woke up signals that a process of change has taken place and helps carry the message into everyday visibility. Overall, the campaign aims to counter the rhetorical misuse of woke, reduce the normalization of discrimination, and support a shift back toward democratic values through community, dialogue, and shared belonging, framing the work as the starting point of a movement rather than a standalone campaign.
